Anthropic Launches Claude Docs and Slides in Beta

Anthropic is expanding Claude beyond the familiar chatbot interface with the launch of Claude Docs and Claude Slides, two new tools designed for creating documents and presentations directly inside Claude. The company introduced both products on September 16 as part of a broader redesign that brings Claude's chat and Cowork environments together. Claude Docs and Slides are currently in beta, alongside Claude Design, and are being made available through Claude's paid plans. The change is significant because Anthropic is no longer positioning Claude simply as an assistant that produces answers. It is increasingly building the environment where the work itself is created. With Claude Docs, users can ask Claude to produce a document from an existing conversation, uploaded files or information available through connected services. The resulting document can then be edited directly by the user or modified through further instructions to Claude. Documents support headings, tables, charts, diagrams and other formatting. Multiple people can work on the same document, leave comments and ask Claude to make changes. Claude Docs can also export work to Word, PDF, Markdown or Google Docs. Claude Slides follows a similar idea for presentations. Users can ask Claude to turn notes, reports or an existing conversation into a presentation, edit individual slides and then present directly from Claude or export the deck to PowerPoint or PDF. One conversation, several types of work The larger change is how Anthropic is reorganising Claude itself. Until now, users often had to choose between a standard Claude conversation and Cowork, Anthropic's environment for handling more complex tasks. Anthropic is now merging those experiences. The company says users can simply describe what they need and Claude can determine which capabilities are required. A conversation that begins as research, for example, could eventually produce a finished document and presentation without requiring the user to move the work into separate applications. Files, projects, connected applications, Claude Skills and other context can also be used while producing the document. That gives Claude Docs a somewhat different starting point from a traditional word processor. Instead of opening an empty document and then bringing information into it, the document can emerge from the conversation and material Claude has already been working with. A more direct challenge to productivity software The launch puts Anthropic closer to a market traditionally dominated by Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. Google has increasingly integrated Gemini across Docs, Slides, Sheets and Gmail, while Microsoft has built Copilot deeply into Word, PowerPoint, Excel and the rest of Microsoft 365. Anthropic is approaching the same problem from the opposite direction. Rather than adding an AI assistant to an established office suite, it is adding document and presentation tools to an AI assistant. Axios described Claude Docs as raising the competitive stakes for Microsoft, as AI companies increasingly move into the everyday work traditionally handled by productivity software. The distinction may become increasingly important as AI assistants develop access to email, cloud storage, company data and other connected services. If the same system can research information, analyse it and produce the final document or presentation, users may have fewer reasons to move between separate applications during a task. That does not mean Claude Docs is already a direct replacement for Word or Google Docs. The product is still in beta and several limitations remain. Claude Docs does not currently offer version history, for example, and some enterprise configurations are not supported. Mobile users can view documents, but full editing and sharing controls currently require the web or desktop version. Anthropic is building a workspace around Claude Docs and Slides also fit into Anthropic's broader expansion of Claude during 2026. Claude now spans coding, research, connected business applications, design, document creation and increasingly autonomous workflows. Anthropic's new unified Claude interface is intended to reduce the separation between those capabilities. The rollout of that new experience is starting with Pro and Max users across web, desktop and mobile, with Anthropic saying additional plans will follow. Claude Docs, Slides and Design are available in beta on paid plans, while Enterprise administrators control whether the tools are enabled for their organisations. For users, the more interesting question will not be whether Claude can generate another document. It will be whether creating, researching, editing and presenting that document can increasingly happen without leaving Claude at all.
